Trump Administration Asks Supreme Court to Reinstate Mail-In Voting Restrictions

The Trump administration has formally asked the Supreme Court to reinstate an executive order imposing new restrictions on mail-in voting. The request follows a lower appeals court decision that blocked key portions of the directive.

The executive order, signed earlier this year, aimed to tighten rules around absentee ballots and mail voting procedures. Supporters argued the measures were necessary to prevent fraud and ensure election integrity.

A federal appeals court ruled against the order, finding that several provisions likely violated federal voting laws. The court determined the restrictions placed an undue burden on voters’ access to the ballot box.

The administration’s filing to the Supreme Court argues that the appeals court overstepped its authority. It contends that the executive order falls within presidential powers to safeguard federal elections.

Legal experts note the case could set a significant precedent for how future administrations regulate voting methods. Both sides are closely watching the high court’s decision on whether to take up the case.

The request puts the Supreme Court in a politically charged environment ahead of upcoming elections. The justices face pressure to balance security concerns with protecting voting rights.

A ruling from the Supreme Court is not expected for several weeks. In the meantime, the blocked portions of the executive order remain on hold.
