Near-Miss at Phoenix Sky Harbor: Two Flights Shared Same Call Sign in Potential Catastrophe

Two planes operating under the same call sign came dangerously close to a serious incident at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, federal officials said. An air traffic controller caught the error just in time, preventing what could have been a catastrophic outcome.

The aircraft involved were both designated as American Airlines flight 2482. One was preparing for departure while the other was on approach to land. Such duplication can confuse pilots and controllers, especially during busy operations.

The controller acted immediately to resolve the conflict, separating the two flights and assigning new instructions. The Federal Aviation Administration is now reviewing the event to determine how the duplicate call sign occurred.

Industry experts say that identical flight numbers on simultaneous operations create a significant safety risk. Pilots rely heavily on call signs to receive routing instructions and avoid collisions in crowded airspace.

American Airlines stated that the situation was handled without any impact on safety or passengers. The airline added that it is cooperating fully with the investigation.

The event highlights the importance of rigorous check systems within air traffic control. Even small errors in coordination can escalate quickly when multiple flights are active.

Both planes landed and departed without further incident. No injuries or damage were reported, and normal operations resumed shortly afterward.
