Democrats Make South Carolina the First Contest in 2028 Presidential Primary Calendar

Democrats finalized a new presidential primary calendar on Friday, designating South Carolina as the first contest in the 2028 nomination cycle. The party’s membership approved the order for the initial six states that will help narrow the candidate field.

The decision pushes Iowa and New Hampshire to later positions in the lineup. Both states have historically held early, influential votes in the Democratic nominating process. Their move down the calendar marks a significant shift in party strategy.

South Carolina now leads the sequence, reflecting the state’s diverse electorate. The change follows a push to prioritize demographics that better represent the party’s broader base. Former President Joe Biden had previously championed a similar restructuring.

The new calendar places Nevada and Michigan in the next tier of voting states. These are followed by a group that includes Georgia and other states yet to be fully detailed. The full schedule was the subject of intense negotiation among party leaders.

Supporters of the revised order argue it strengthens the party’s competitiveness in general elections. They point to South Carolina’s pivotal role in recent nomination battles. Critics, however, contend the shift marginalizes traditional early states like Iowa and New Hampshire.

Iowa’s caucus system has faced logistical challenges in recent cycles, complicating its standing. New Hampshire lawmakers have vowed to push back against the new schedule. State law there mandates its primary be held first, creating potential friction.

The rule change must still navigate final procedural steps. Party officials expect to implement the new calendar ahead of the 2028 election season. Candidates will now adjust their campaign strategies to focus on the revised early state map.
