Lisa Cook Rejects Trump’s Baseless Fraud Claims in Defiant Stand for Fed Independence

Lisa D. Cook pushed back Tuesday against President Trump’s allegations that she committed mortgage fraud, calling the claims baseless and a clear attempt to remove her from the Federal Reserve Board.

The Fed governor issued a formal statement denying any wrongdoing, saying the accusation appears to be part of a broader pressure campaign against the central bank’s independence.

Trump has repeatedly sought to oust Cook, who was confirmed in 2022, citing policy disagreements and now the unsubstantiated legal claim. Cook’s response marks a rare public rebuttal by a sitting Fed governor to a sitting president.

The alleged fraud, according to Trump’s recent social media posts, involves a property transaction from over a decade ago. Cook said the loan in question was fully repaid and processed under standard procedures.

Legal experts note that no federal or state agency has filed charges against Cook, and the White House has offered no evidence to support the claim. The Fed’s internal ethics office has previously reviewed Cook’s financial disclosures without issue.

Market analysts view the conflict as a test of Federal Reserve independence, which investors consider vital for economic stability. Stock futures showed little immediate reaction, suggesting traders are treating the matter as political rather than economic.

Cook affirmed her commitment to her duties, stating she intends to complete her term, which runs through 2030. The standoff raises questions about the limits of presidential authority over independent regulatory agencies.

Congressional leaders from both parties have remained largely silent, though a few Democrats called on Trump to provide proof or drop the matter. The Fed itself has not commented beyond Cook’s personal statement.

Observers note that removing a Fed governor before term expiration is legally difficult without a showing of cause, such as criminal conduct or misconduct. No such finding has been made public.

Cook’s tenure has focused on labor market research and inflation policy, earning her respect among academic economists. The current dispute, however, places her at the center of a political fight with no clear resolution in sight.
