Rubenstein Acquires Dismantled Kennedy Center ‘Blue’ Sculpture for National Gallery

David Rubenstein has acquired the dismantled “Blue” sculpture that was removed from the Kennedy Center last week. The purchase was made directly from the artist’s foundation, and the piece will now be installed at the National Gallery of Art.

Rubenstein, who was ousted as chairman of the Kennedy Center, did not disclose the financial terms of the transaction. The sculpture’s removal came amid broader leadership changes and operational overhauls at the Washington cultural institution.

The work, created by artist Deborah Butterfield, had been a prominent fixture outside the Kennedy Center since 2002. Its dismantling last week drew attention from arts observers and visitors familiar with the distinctive piece.

The artist’s foundation confirmed the sale but offered no further comment on the reasons for the transfer. Rubenstein’s decision to place the sculpture at the National Gallery ensures continued public access to the work.

The National Gallery of Art has not yet announced where the sculpture will be displayed on its grounds. A timeline for installation has also not been confirmed.

Rubenstein, a billionaire financier and prominent arts philanthropist, has a history of acquiring and loaning significant cultural works. His involvement with the Kennedy Center ended abruptly amid reported disagreements over programming direction.

The move to preserve the sculpture at another major institution suggests an effort to maintain its visibility within the capital’s cultural landscape. Further details about the artwork’s future presentation are expected in the coming months.
