Oil Surges Toward $100 on Saudi Attacks, Stock Futures Slide

Oil prices surged toward the $100 mark as reports emerged of Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, driving Brent crude higher and rattling global markets. Stock futures sank in response, signaling a cautious open for Wall Street as investors weighed the implications of fresh geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The reported strikes targeted key Saudi energy infrastructure, raising concerns about supply disruptions in one of the world’s most critical oil-producing regions. Brent crude, the international benchmark, climbed sharply in early trading, with analysts noting the move reflected growing risk premiums tied to potential output losses.

U.S. stock futures pointed to a weaker start for major indices, including the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq. Investors moved toward safer assets, with Treasury yields and gold prices seeing modest gains as uncertainty spread across trading desks.

The attacks, attributed to Houthi forces, underscore persistent instability in the region despite ongoing diplomatic efforts. Saudi officials have not yet issued a full assessment of damages, leaving markets to speculate on the scale of any disruption to crude flows.

Energy stocks appeared poised to buck the broader downtrend, as higher oil prices typically boost exploration and production companies. However, airline and transport shares faced pressure, with fuel cost concerns outweighing any potential demand gains.

Economists warned that sustained oil price increases near $100 could complicate inflation efforts, potentially delaying central bank moves on interest rates. A spike in energy costs often filters through to consumer prices, adding fresh headwinds to an already cautious economic outlook.

Trading volumes remained thin in premarket action, with many participants awaiting clearer details on the situation in Saudi Arabia. Analysts advised that volatility could persist until the extent of the attacks and any response from Riyadh becomes known.

For now, the market’s direction hinges on oil supply dynamics and geopolitical developments, with little room for optimism in the near term. The session ahead is likely to test investor resilience as they navigate the latest shock to global supply chains.
