Trump Awards Medal of Freedom to 9/11 Hero ‘Man in the Red Bandanna’ Welles Crowther

President Trump awarded the Medal of Freedom to Welles Remy Crowther, honoring the 9/11 hero known as the “Man in the Red Bandanna.” Crowther, an equity trader and volunteer firefighter, is credited with saving at least 18 people at the World Trade Center before he was killed in the attack.

The ceremony took place at the White House, where family members accepted the honor on his behalf. Crowther’s mother and sister spoke briefly, recalling his final acts of courage. His remains were recovered in 2002, but his identity as the rescuer was not confirmed until years later.

Crowther’s story became widely known after his family connected his actions to the red bandanna he habitually carried. Eyewitness accounts described a man guiding others to safety using that bandanna to cover his mouth. He made multiple trips up and down the tower, assisting the injured and directing people toward exits.

His efforts were reconstructed through phone records and interviews with survivors. On the morning of the attack, Crowther worked on the 78th floor of the South Tower. After the plane struck, he helped a group of strangers evacuate before returning to the upper floors to find others.

The Medal of Freedom is the nation’s highest civilian honor, given to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to U.S. security or culture. Crowther’s award was issued posthumously, recognizing both his professional life and his volunteer service with the local fire department.

Crowther grew up in Nyack, New York, and studied at Boston College, where he played lacrosse. He worked for Sandler O’Neill, an investment firm that lost 66 employees in the attacks. His father, an off-duty firefighter, had inspired his interest in rescue work.

Welles Remy Crowther’s legacy continues to be honored through scholarships and a foundation established in his name. The bandanna, now a symbol of selflessness, is on display at the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York City. His last moments remain a testament to ordinary people performing extraordinary acts.
