U.S. Investors’ ‘Exorbitant Privilege’: How AI Stocks and Dollar Dominance Create an Unfair Advantage

American investors hold a unique advantage in global markets. This edge lets them earn higher returns with less risk than foreign peers. Economists call it an “exorbitant privilege.”

The term originally described the U.S. dollar’s role as the world’s reserve currency. It now applies to American investors who benefit from deep, liquid markets. These markets offer diverse opportunities not available elsewhere.

AI stocks have driven much of the recent market gains. Companies leading in artificial intelligence attract massive capital. Their growth lifts broader indexes and investor portfolios.

This concentration in AI creates both opportunity and vulnerability. A handful of firms now account for a large share of returns. Any stumble in that sector could ripple across the market.

Foreign investors often face higher costs to access U.S. assets. Currency risks and regulatory hurdles add friction. Americans avoid these burdens when investing domestically.

The privilege also stems from the dollar’s strength in global trade. Most commodities and debt are priced in dollars. This gives U.S. investors a natural home-field advantage.

Sustaining this edge depends on open capital markets and innovation. Policy shifts or trade disruptions could erode the benefit. For now, American investors remain in an enviable position.
