‘Nightmare Scenario’: Zero-Click Spyware Is Infecting Phones via Targeted Ads

Security researchers have uncovered the first technical evidence of spyware spreading through online ads. The Citizen Lab documented the case of a zero-click attack that infects phones without any user interaction. The spyware is linked to a mercenary surveillance vendor.

The attack chain begins with a malicious advertisement displayed on a legitimate website. Simply loading the ad is enough to trigger the exploit. No clicks, taps, or downloads are required from the victim.

The spyware targets mobile devices through vulnerabilities in the operating system or browser. Once installed, it can access messages, calls, location data, and microphones. The infection leaves little trace for average users to detect.

The Citizen Lab traced the infrastructure behind the ad campaign to a commercial spyware operation. This marks a shift from traditional delivery methods like phishing links or text messages. Advertising networks serve as a wide and difficult-to-monitor distribution channel.

Ad networks often struggle to screen every creative and landing page at scale. Malicious actors exploit this gap by rotating ads and targeting specific regions or device types. The result is a stealthy and highly scalable attack vector.

Mobile users have limited tools to block such threats at the network level. Standard ad blockers may stop some ads but cannot neutralize every exploit. Security patches remain the most reliable defense against zero-click infections.

The findings raise urgent questions about ad tech accountability and platform security. Regulators and browser makers face pressure to harden defenses against ad-based exploitation. Researchers urge vendors to audit their ad supply chains for malicious content.
