Trump Administration Imposes New Drone Flight Limits Near U.S.-Mexico Border

The Trump administration has imposed new limits on drone flights near the U.S.-Mexico border. Unauthorized drones are now banned within one nautical mile of the southern border.

The restriction applies up to 400 feet in the air. Officials cite security concerns as the reason for the change. The rule targets unauthorized activity in a sensitive zone.

Federal agencies will enforce the ban under existing aviation authority. Violators could face penalties, though specifics remain unclear. The move follows rising reports of drone sightings along the border.

Commercial and recreational pilots must now avoid the restricted corridor. That area covers a narrow strip on the U.S. side. Pilots should check maps before flying near the region.

The Department of Homeland Security has pushed for tighter drone controls for months. Border agents report drones used for smuggling and surveillance. The new rule aims to curb those operations.

Some aviation groups worry the ban is too broad. They say it may affect legal flights near the border. The FAA has not yet issued detailed guidance for operators.

Legal experts expect court challenges to the restriction. Similar limits have faced scrutiny in the past. The administration says the rule is necessary for national security.

Enforcement will rely on radar, radio signals, and agent observations. Penalties may include fines or equipment seizure. The rule takes effect immediately, according to officials.

Drone operators should monitor updates from federal agencies. The restricted zone may expand or change over time. Staying informed will help pilots avoid violations.
