Microsoft now allows Xbox players to convert their physical game discs into digital licenses at no cost. The program aims to bridge the gap between disc owners and the convenience of digital libraries. Players can access their converted games without needing the disc.
The process requires an Xbox console with a disc drive and an internet connection. Players insert a supported disc and follow on-screen prompts to verify ownership. Once verified, the digital version is tied to the player’s account.
Not every game supports the program. Microsoft maintains a list of eligible titles, and the catalog may expand over time. Players should check compatibility before assuming a disc qualifies for conversion.
Converted games behave like standard digital purchases. They can be installed, launched, and updated without the disc present. This removes the need to swap discs during play sessions.
Physical discs retain value beyond this program. They can still be sold, traded, or shared with friends. Digitized copies cannot be transferred once linked to an account, so the original disc remains the only transferable version.
Microsoft has not announced plans to discontinue disc drives or physical game production. The program appears to supplement rather than replace existing disc-based play. Collectors and budget-conscious players still benefit from buying and reselling physical copies.
Players should keep their discs even after converting them. The digital license may depend on ongoing account and service availability. Physical media offers a fallback that digital libraries cannot guarantee.
