Powering a car dashboard places heavy demands on a handset. Navigation, streaming, and screen mirroring push the processor and display simultaneously. That workload generates significant heat, especially on warm days.
Charging while running CarPlay or Android Auto adds another heat source. The battery absorbs energy and releases thermal energy at the same time. Heat builds faster when the phone sits in direct sunlight.
Mount the phone where airflow reaches it. Dashboard vents work well because they circulate cool cabin air. Avoid windshield mounts that expose the handset to direct sun.
Skip wireless charging on long drives when possible. Cable connections generate less heat than induction pads. If wireless charging is necessary, remove the phone case to improve ventilation.
Close unused apps before starting a trip. Background processes compete for processor time and add to the thermal load. A clean app list keeps the system running cooler.
Lower screen brightness during navigation. The display is a major heat source, and dimming it reduces power draw. Many head units allow the phone screen to stay off entirely while projecting.
Update the phone’s software regularly. Manufacturers refine thermal management with each release. Older versions can run hotter under sustained load.
If the phone overheats, it will throttle performance or shut down apps. Stop charging and move the device to a cooler spot. Let it cool before resuming navigation to protect the battery’s long-term health.
