Inside the Democratic Plot to Crowd Alaska’s Senate Ballot and Siphon Votes From Dan Sullivan

A coordinated effort by Democratic operatives sought to influence Alaska’s midterm Senate race by recruiting additional candidates. The operation aimed to draw votes away from Republican Senator Dan Sullivan. The effort was tied to Senate Democratic nominee Mary Peltola.

Operatives aligned with Peltola spent months searching for candidates to enter the race. Their goal was to split the Republican vote. Recruits were sought to appear on the ballot alongside Sullivan.

The strategy relied on Alaska’s ranked-choice voting system. Multiple challengers could dilute Sullivan’s support. Such a scenario could benefit the Democratic nominee.

Peltola’s campaign has not publicly addressed the recruitment effort. The operatives involved reportedly worked independently. No direct coordination with the official campaign has been confirmed.

Senator Sullivan’s team has criticized the tactic. They described it as an attempt to manipulate the electoral process. The campaign said voters deserve a straightforward contest.

Alaska’s political landscape makes such maneuvers possible. Ranked-choice voting allows for multiple candidates from the same party. That structure can create openings for strategic recruitment.

The race remains competitive as the midterm election approaches. Both parties are watching Alaska closely. The outcome could affect the balance of power in the Senate.
