U.S. Restricts Trade With Chinese Genomics Firm BGI Over Alleged Forced Labor

The United States has moved to restrict trade with BGI, a major Chinese genomics company. The action blocks shipments from the firm. U.S. officials cite alleged ties to forced labor and the abuse of minority groups.

The restrictions target BGI’s commercial activities involving American suppliers and buyers. Shipments from the company will be halted under the new measure. The policy aims to prevent U.S. technology and goods from supporting alleged abuses.

BGI is one of China’s largest genomics firms. It provides DNA sequencing services and research tools used worldwide. The company has not publicly responded to the allegations.

U.S. officials say the decision follows a review of labor practices linked to BGI. The review found evidence of forced labor and mistreatment of minority groups. The government describes the move as a human rights measure.

The trade restriction may affect research partnerships and supply chains. Universities and labs that rely on BGI equipment could face disruptions. U.S. companies that sell to BGI will need to adjust contracts.

The ban adds to growing tensions over biotechnology between Washington and Beijing. Both countries have competitive genomics industries. The U.S. has previously restricted other Chinese tech firms over security and rights concerns.

BGI has denied wrongdoing in past disputes. The company argues its work is scientific and unrelated to labor issues. The new restrictions take effect immediately, according to the report.

Industry analysts expect limited short-term impact on global genomics research. Alternative suppliers exist in the U.S. and Europe. However, some specialized services may see higher costs and delays.
