Wage Growth Plummets to 5-Year Low as Paychecks Fail to Keep Pace With Rising Prices

Wage growth has fallen to its lowest level in five years, adding pressure on American households already coping with rising prices. The slowdown marks the second consecutive quarter in which worker compensation has trailed inflation.

New data shows pay gains failing to keep pace with the cost of everyday goods and services. For many workers, each paycheck now covers less than it did a year ago.

The gap between wages and inflation is squeezing household budgets across income levels. Essentials such as food, housing, and transportation continue to absorb a larger share of take-home pay.

Economists note that slower wage growth can signal a cooling labor market. Employers are raising pay more cautiously as hiring demand eases from its post-pandemic peak.

The trend carries implications for consumer spending, which drives most U.S. economic activity. Weaker pay growth may temper retail sales in the months ahead.

Policymakers face a delicate balance between controlling inflation and supporting wage gains. Interest rate decisions will weigh heavily on how quickly workers regain lost purchasing power.

For now, the data points to a continued squeeze on household finances. Workers seeking relief will look to coming quarters for signs of a reversal.
