A federal judge has appointed a special master to investigate whether Trump administration officials misled the court in a legal dispute over a Washington golf course.
Judge Ana C. Reyes ordered the outside investigator to determine if parks officials or Justice Department lawyers withheld key planning documents.
The case centers on East Potomac Park, a public golf course in Washington that has drawn scrutiny over proposed changes.
The special master will examine whether government attorneys failed to disclose plans related to the park during litigation.
Reyes said an independent review is needed to establish whether statements made to the court were accurate and complete.
The appointment adds a layer of oversight to a case that raises questions about transparency in federal legal proceedings.
The investigation will focus on the conduct of both parks officials and Justice Department lawyers involved in the suit.
Further developments are expected as the special master begins reviewing the withheld materials and related testimony.
