President Donald Trump has selected Dr. Nicole B. Saphier as his new nominee for Surgeon General, replacing Dr. Casey Means, who withdrew from consideration.
Dr. Means’s nomination had stalled in the confirmation process, partly due to her controversial views on vaccines.
The president announced the change, stating he was instead nominating Dr. Saphier, a radiologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
Dr. Saphier brings clinical experience from one of the nation’s leading cancer hospitals.
Her background focuses on cancer imaging and patient care, offering a different expertise than Dr. Means’s holistic and nutritional approach.
The withdrawal of Dr. Means marks a significant shift in the administration’s priorities for the public health role.
Senate confirmation hearings for Dr. Saphier have not yet been scheduled.
The Surgeon General position requires Senate approval, and the new nominee will face scrutiny over her policy positions.
