My husband and I are 75. We have $1.5 million in stocks and $425,000 in savings. Is that too much cash?

A 75-year-old couple is questioning whether their financial strategy holds too much cash. The pair holds $1.5 million in stocks and $425,000 in savings. They are debt-free.

The husband has not yet retired. When he does, he will receive 80% of his salary as pension income. The couple wants to know if their cash reserves are excessive for their age and stage of life.

Financial advisors generally recommend keeping three to six months of living expenses in cash. For retirees, that guideline can stretch to two years of expenses to avoid selling stocks during market downturns.

The couple’s $425,000 cash position likely exceeds that recommendation. Depending on their annual spending, this amount could cover several years of expenses. This approach offers security but carries a cost.

Holding too much cash can erode purchasing power over time due to inflation. Cash does not generate meaningful returns in a low-interest environment. The couple may be missing out on long-term growth opportunities.

A balanced strategy could involve reducing cash reserves to a more targeted amount. The remainder could be allocated to conservative investments such as bonds or dividend-paying stocks. This maintains liquidity while improving growth potential.

Their substantial pension income adds stability. With guaranteed monthly payments, the need for a large cash buffer decreases. The couple might consider reinvesting excess cash into a diversified portfolio.

Professional financial advice remains valuable at this stage. A certified planner can model withdrawal rates, tax implications, and longevity risk. The goal is to align cash levels with overall retirement income needs.
