Airlines Hike Baggage Fees and Surcharges as Fuel Costs Soar

Several major airlines are raising baggage fees and adding fuel surcharges. This move comes as carriers face sharply increasing fuel costs.

Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and WestJet are among those implementing the new charges. The increases apply to both checked and carry-on luggage in many cases.

The primary driver is the surge in global jet fuel prices. Ongoing geopolitical tensions have significantly disrupted supply and increased expenses.

These new fees are described as “sticky,” meaning they are likely to remain in place. They represent a permanent shift in airline pricing structures.

Passengers will see these charges added on top of already rising base airfares. The total cost for travel is climbing from multiple directions.

The changes affect flights within North America and on many international routes. Travelers are advised to check their airline’s specific policy before booking.

This trend underscores the airline industry’s effort to offset operational costs. It signals a broader move towards passengers bearing more ancillary fees.
