Amazon is expanding its same-day delivery operations to compete more aggressively with Walmart. Bank of America analysts report the company plans to open additional same-day fulfillment centers across the country. The move targets basic goods that shoppers want immediately.
Same-day fulfillment centers stock fast-moving items like household essentials and personal care products. These facilities sit closer to customers than traditional warehouses. They allow Amazon to pack and ship orders within hours rather than days.
Walmart has long dominated brick-and-mortar retail by offering convenient pickup and quick delivery. The company operates thousands of stores that double as fulfillment hubs. This gives Walmart a structural advantage in reaching customers fast.
Amazon’s new strategy aims to close that gap, according to BofA analysts. The centers represent an effort to make basic goods immediately accessible. Speed matters most for repeat purchases like toothpaste, paper towels, and snacks.
The expansion could pressure Walmart’s grocery and household goods business. Those categories drive frequent store visits and customer loyalty. Faster delivery from Amazon might pull some of that traffic online.
Amazon already offers same-day delivery in many urban areas through existing facilities. The reported blitz would extend that capability to more regions. Suburban and rural customers could see the biggest change.
Retail analysts view the plan as a direct challenge to Walmart’s core strength. Both companies are racing to shorten delivery times and lower costs. The winner will likely be the retailer that gets everyday items to doorsteps fastest.
