Calder’s ‘Mountains and Clouds’ Sculpture Returns to Glory After Major Senate Restoration

The restoration of Alexander Calder’s “Mountains and Clouds” has been completed in the Senate office building. The monumental sculpture, a fixture of the atrium since 1987, required extensive repairs after years of environmental wear.

The artwork consists of two distinct parts: a towering black metal “mountain” and a suspended mobile of white “clouds.” Over time, dust, corrosion, and mechanical strain affected both sections. Conservators dismantled the mobile to clean and rebalance its delicate elements.

Funding for the project stalled for months due to bureaucratic delays. Private donors and legislators from both parties eventually intervened to secure the necessary resources. Their bipartisan effort underscored the sculpture’s cultural significance.

Conservation specialists used specialized tools to treat the painted aluminum surfaces. They replaced worn cables and reinforced the mountain’s internal framework. The goal was to preserve Calder’s original artistic intent while ensuring structural safety.

The restoration also addressed lighting and air circulation issues in the atrium. Improved conditions will slow future deterioration. The sculpture now appears as Calder intended, with its vibrant colors and dynamic balance.

A formal re dedication ceremony is planned for later this fall. It will honor the donors, conservators, and staff who made the project possible. Public tours of the restored work will resume shortly after.

“Mountains and Clouds” remains one of Calder’s largest indoor works. Its revival highlights the ongoing need for private and public support of public art. The piece continues to inspire visitors to the Senate building.
