Citadel has acquired the stock portfolio of the investment firm Situational Awareness following significant losses in artificial intelligence bets. The deal comes after the highflying hedge fund, run by Leopold Aschenbrenner, entered a period of financial strain.
The acquisition marks a sharp turn for Situational Awareness, which had gained attention for its aggressive AI-focused investment strategy. That strategy unraveled as market conditions shifted against the technology sector.
Citadel, one of the world’s largest hedge funds, will take over the portfolio’s holdings. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Leopold Aschenbrenner’s fund had previously bet heavily on AI companies, betting that the sector would continue to surge. Those bets soured as valuations corrected and investor sentiment cooled.
The move allows Situational Awareness to offload its remaining assets amid mounting losses. Citadel, known for its risk management discipline, sees opportunity in the distressed portfolio.
Aschenbrenner’s troubles underscore the volatility of the AI investment landscape. Many funds that rode the AI rally in 2023 have since faced steep reversals.
Citadel will now manage the acquired holdings, integrating them into its broader investment strategy. The firm declined to comment on future plans for the portfolio.
