FIFA World Cup 2026: How much each USMNT player could earn in prize money

The U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) is set to compete in the FIFA World Cup, with each player standing to earn a significant share of the total prize money. FIFA has allocated a record prize pool for the tournament, which will be distributed based on how far teams advance.

Under a landmark 2022 agreement between U.S. Soccer and its men’s and women’s national teams, players from both squads will share equally in World Cup prize pools. This deal, the first of its kind globally, ensures that U.S. women’s soccer players also receive a portion of the men’s World Cup earnings.

The total prize money for the 2022 men’s World Cup in Qatar reached $440 million, with the champion team earning $42 million. For the USMNT, advancing past the group stage could increase individual payouts significantly, as prize money increases with each knockout round.

Individual player earnings are determined by a collective bargaining agreement that splits tournament winnings among the squad. Typically, a portion goes to the players, with the rest allocated to U.S. Soccer for development programs and operational costs.

If the USMNT reaches the Round of 16, each player could earn roughly $200,000 to $300,000, based on historical payout structures. A quarterfinal appearance would boost that amount, while a semifinal run could push individual shares past $500,000.

The equal-sharing agreement means U.S. women’s national team players will also benefit from the men’s World Cup earnings. This structure aims to close the gender pay gap in soccer, with both teams pooling their prize money from future World Cups.

Financial experts note that this model could inspire other national federations to adopt similar equal-pay frameworks. The deal sets a precedent for how major tournament winnings can be fairly distributed across men’s and women’s teams.

As the USMNT prepares for its World Cup opener, the prize money breakdown offers a clear incentive for the squad. Every victory on the field not only advances the team but also increases financial rewards for players and their female counterparts.
