From Broadcom to Verizon, Corporate America Is Pushing Back on Tokenized Stocks

Corporate America is pushing back against efforts to place tokenized versions of their stocks on blockchain networks. Broadcom and several other major firms have formally objected to the practice. The resistance signals growing tension between traditional companies and a new wave of digital asset platforms.

Tokenized stocks are digital tokens designed to mirror the price of publicly traded shares. They trade on blockchain networks rather than conventional exchanges. Supporters say this approach could widen access and enable round-the-clock trading.

The objections follow the introduction of a new regulatory framework for digital assets. That framework has encouraged some platforms to explore tokenized equity offerings. Companies, however, argue they were not consulted before their shares were used.

Verizon and UnitedHealth are among the firms reportedly uneasy about the trend. These companies worry that tokenized shares could confuse investors and complicate corporate governance. They also question whether such products comply with existing securities rules.

Legal experts note that tokenized stocks sit in a regulatory gray area. It remains unclear whether token holders receive voting rights or dividends. Such uncertainty raises concerns about investor protection and market integrity.

The debate highlights a broader clash over who controls a company’s stock. Issuers traditionally decide how and where their shares trade. Tokenization platforms argue that secondary markets should remain open to innovation.

Some market participants believe tokenization could modernize trading and cut costs. Others see it as a risky workaround that skirts established safeguards. Regulators have yet to issue definitive guidance on the matter.

For now, corporate objections may slow adoption but not halt it. Platforms continue to develop tokenized products despite the pushback. How regulators respond will likely shape the future of equity trading.
