Justice Dept. Files New Leak Charges Against Comey Over 2016 Disclosure

The Justice Department has filed additional charges against former FBI Director James B. Comey. The new allegations involve a purported leak of national security information. Prosecutors say the leak went to The Times in October 2016.

Comey’s lawyers pushed back against the charges. They said the case centers on an issue that had already been investigated. That earlier inquiry did not lead to any charges.

The defense argues the matter was resolved years ago. No new evidence has been presented publicly. The legal team called the refiled case unnecessary.

The original investigation examined whether sensitive material reached reporters. It closed without prosecution. The department has now revived the issue under new charges.

Details of the new indictment remain limited. It is unclear what evidence prosecutors relied on. The filing marks an unusual step for a closed matter.

Comey has faced repeated legal scrutiny since leaving the bureau. Supporters say the new charges stem from political pressure. Critics argue the case raises unresolved questions about leaks.

The court will now weigh whether the refiled charges can proceed. A hearing date has not been announced. Both sides are preparing for the next legal phase.
