King Charles arrived in Washington on Monday for a state visit shadowed by the aftermath of a shooting at the White House correspondents’ dinner.
The visit was planned to showcase American culture and diplomacy. Yet, the violence from the dinner has shifted the atmosphere surrounding the royal engagement.
President Trump welcomed the monarch at the White House. The two leaders are expected to discuss trade, security, and shared interests.
Security remained tight across the capital. Police presence was notably increased around the National Mall and official buildings.
The shooting at the correspondents’ dinner left three people injured. Authorities have not yet confirmed a motive for the attack.
The state visit includes a state dinner and a tour of historical landmarks. King Charles is also scheduled to meet with members of Congress.
Royal aides acknowledged the somber mood. They said the king expressed condolences for those affected by the violence.
The trip is King Charles’s first official state visit to the United States since his coronation. It was originally intended to strengthen ties between the two nations.
