Mark Walter and Todd Boehly have agreed to sell their stake in Chelsea Football Club for $1.3 billion. The buyers are Clearlake Capital, a private-equity firm based in California. Clearlake already holds a majority ownership position in the Premier League team.
The transaction values the London club at a significant sum. It also marks a major shift in Chelsea’s ownership structure. Walter and Boehly originally acquired their stake as part of a group that purchased Chelsea in 2022.
That group, led by Boehly and Clearlake, bought the club after the previous owner Roman Abramovich put it up for sale. The deal was finalized for £2.5 billion at the time. Walter later joined as a co-owner through his investment firm.
Clearlake’s increased control could simplify decision-making at the club. The firm has been involved in Chelsea’s operations since the 2022 takeover. Its stake will now grow further with this purchase.
Chelsea has faced financial pressures in recent years. The club has invested heavily in players while trying to comply with profit and sustainability rules. Ownership stability may help address those challenges.
The sale remains subject to regulatory approval from the Premier League. No timeline for completion has been announced. Representatives for the parties involved have not commented publicly.
This deal follows a trend of American investors expanding their presence in European football. Private-equity firms increasingly view top clubs as valuable assets. Chelsea remains one of the most recognized brands in the sport.
