Temporary Protected Status for migrants from Ukraine and Sudan will remain in place beyond Monday. The protections had been scheduled to expire at the start of the week. The Trump administration has not yet issued a final decision on the designations.
The program, known as TPS, allows migrants from countries facing armed conflict or natural disasters to live and work legally in the United States. Ukraine and Sudan both meet those criteria. Neither country is currently considered safe for large-scale returns.
Monday’s deadline passed without a formal termination order. Administration officials said an announcement would come “at the appropriate time.” That language leaves the protections in force indefinitely for now.
The delay affects tens of thousands of beneficiaries. Ukrainian nationals arrived largely after the 2022 Russian invasion. Sudanese migrants fled a civil war that escalated in 2023.
Advocacy groups had urged the administration to extend the designations. They argued that conditions in both countries remain unstable. Backers of tighter immigration limits pushed for the protections to end.
TPS decisions are typically reviewed country by country. Each designation carries its own expiration date and renewal process. The Ukraine and Sudan cases had drawn unusual attention because of the scale of the conflicts.
For now, current beneficiaries can continue to apply for work permits and travel authorization. Employers face no immediate change in verification rules. The next update will come when the administration sets a new date.
