‘Nightmare Scenario’: Zero-Click Spyware Is Infecting Phones via Targeted Ads

Security researchers have documented a new spyware delivery method that requires no user interaction. The Citizen Lab published technical evidence showing mercenary spyware spreading through targeted online ads. This marks the first confirmed case of such spyware using ad networks as an infection vector.

The spyware exploits vulnerabilities in mobile browsers. Victims do not need to click links or download files to become infected. Simply viewing a malicious advertisement can trigger the installation of surveillance software.

The attack chain begins with a legitimate ad network. Attackers inject malicious code into advertisements served to specific targets. Once the ad loads, the exploit executes automatically on the device.

Researchers linked the spyware to a known mercenary surveillance vendor. The campaign appears highly targeted, focusing on specific individuals rather than mass audiences. Targets likely include journalists, activists, and political figures.

This delivery method bypasses traditional security warnings. Users cannot protect themselves by avoiding suspicious links or attachments. The infection occurs silently during routine browsing activity.

Ad networks face growing pressure to screen content more thoroughly. Current verification systems failed to detect the malicious payloads. The incident highlights gaps in digital advertising supply chain security.

Mobile users remain vulnerable until patches are widely deployed. Device manufacturers and browser developers are working on fixes. Researchers urge ad platforms to strengthen their review processes immediately.

The case signals an escalation in spyware distribution tactics. Zero-click attacks are becoming more accessible to mercenary groups. Experts warn that similar campaigns could target broader populations in the future.
