One form at the bank could stop scammers from draining your parents’ life savings

Financial advisers report a sharp rise in scams targeting older adults, with romance fraud ranking among the most devastating. Victims often lose their life savings after months of manipulation. One adviser described a client’s demeanor during the scheme as robotic and detached.

The single most effective safeguard is a trusted contact form held by banks and brokers. This document lets a designated family member receive alerts about suspicious activity. It does not grant control over accounts or the power to block transactions.

Most major financial institutions now offer the form under names like trusted contact or emergency contact. Advisers urge adult children to help parents complete one for every account. The step takes minutes but creates a critical early warning system.

Romance scams typically begin on dating apps, social media, or gaming platforms. Scammers build emotional bonds before requesting money for emergencies, travel, or crypto investments. Older adults living alone face the highest risk of prolonged deception.

Victims often resist family warnings because the relationship feels genuine. A trusted contact gives institutions legal permission to pause suspicious transfers. That pause creates time for a calm conversation before funds disappear.

Banks may also flag unusual withdrawals or wire requests to the contact. Several large brokerages have made the form mandatory for new advisory accounts. Regulators encourage the practice but do not require it nationwide.

Families should review the form every few years or after major life changes. Advisers suggest pairing it with a durable power of attorney for broader protection. Open conversations about money and loneliness reduce shame that fuels secrecy.

Scammers rarely stop at one victim or one payment. Early detection through a trusted contact can break the cycle before retirement savings vanish. The paperwork is simple, free, and available at most financial firms.
