Proud Boys’ Journey From Jan. 6 Convictions to Pardons and a Red-Carpet Premiere

A documentary titled “American Martyrs” premiered at a gala screening this week, drawing figures convicted for their roles in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

The event marked the latest stage in a remarkable shift for members of the Proud Boys, who moved from federal prosecution to presidential pardons to a red-carpet premiere.

Several men convicted of seditious conspiracy appeared at the screening, presented as political prisoners turned celebrated figures by allies of former President Donald Trump.

The film portrays the defendants as victims of a weaponized justice system, a narrative that prosecutors and many legal observers strongly reject.

Federal juries convicted multiple Proud Boys leaders after trials that detailed their coordination before and during the Capitol breach.

Trump later granted clemency to numerous Jan. 6 defendants, a move that drew sharp criticism from law enforcement groups and bipartisan voices.

Organizers framed the premiere as a cultural counterpoint to the official congressional investigations that documented the attack’s causes and consequences.

Historians note that similar efforts to reframe the events of Jan. 6 have become a sustained project within certain political circles.

The screening drew media coverage and supporters, while critics described it as a propaganda exercise aimed at rewriting a violent episode.

No new legal proceedings are attached to the film, but its release signals how pardons have reshaped public memory of the riot.
