Tax-Free Weekend Savings Kick Off in Texas, Florida, and 14 Other States — Key Dates and Rules to Know

Shoppers in Texas, Florida, and several other states can start saving on back-to-school purchases this weekend. Tax-free holidays are underway across 16 states throughout August, providing relief as families face rising costs.

The average family is expected to spend over $800 per student on school supplies, clothing, and electronics this year. That figure represents a significant jump from previous seasons, pushing more households to seek out discounts. The tax holidays apply to specific items, varying widely from state to state.

In Texas, the exemption covers most clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks priced under $100. Florida’s program includes similar items, along with certain personal computers and learning aids. The holidays also extend to some states with longer windows, such as Maryland and Missouri, where the savings period spans more than a weekend.

Eligibility rules differ by location, so shoppers should verify what qualifies before heading to the register. Some states cap the price of individual items, while others restrict the number of qualifying purchases. For example, Louisiana excludes digital downloads and certain accessories from its list of exempt goods.

Retailers in participating states are preparing for a surge in foot traffic, with many offering additional in-store promotions during the designated periods. Online purchases are also eligible in most locations, provided the seller is based in the same state. This allows remote shoppers to take advantage of the savings without leaving home.

The holidays stem from longstanding state policies designed to boost consumer spending during the back-to-school season. Proponents argue they offer tangible relief to middle-class families, while critics note they benefit higher-income households more than those in need. Some states have expanded their programs this year, responding to public pressure over affordability.

Shoppers are advised to plan ahead, as the savings are limited to specific dates. Most holidays run from Friday through Sunday, though a few states stretch the period to two weeks. Families can use state government websites to access full lists of qualifying items and any applicable price thresholds.

With costs escalating, the temporary tax breaks provide a brief window of opportunity. Analysts expect strong participation, particularly in states with lower income levels. For many families, the savings represent a meaningful offset against the overall expense of preparing children for the new school year.

Beyond back-to-school gear, some states are including emergency preparedness supplies in their exemptions this year. This addition reflects a broader trend toward seasonal shopping events that cater to local needs. Shoppers should also note that some items, such as sports equipment and jewelry, are typically excluded.

As the month progresses, more states will activate their holidays, extending the savings opportunities well into late August. For those in non-participating states, nearby retailers may still offer competitive pricing to draw customers. Experts recommend comparing prices across both tax-exempt and non-exempt regions to maximize overall savings.
