Traders Who Bought the Dip With a Leveraged Nasdaq-100 ETF Just Learned a Painful Lesson

Investors who piled into a leveraged exchange-traded fund to bet on a Nasdaq-100 rebound last month learned a costly lesson. The fund amplifies daily index moves, so losses can mount quickly when prices fall. Many buyers entered near the bottom of a tech selloff, expecting a swift recovery that did not arrive.

Leveraged ETFs are designed to deliver a multiple of the index’s daily return, not its long-term performance. That structure exposes holders to volatility decay, which erodes returns when markets swing sharply. A fund can lose value even when the underlying index ends roughly flat.

The rush into these products reflected a broader appetite for aggressive dip-buying among retail traders. That enthusiasm peaked just as technology shares resumed their decline. Late entrants absorbed amplified losses rather than the rebound they anticipated.

These funds reset their exposure every day, so their results over longer periods can diverge widely from simple multiples of the index. Compounding works against investors during choppy markets. Holding periods beyond a single session carry added risk that many buyers overlook.

Fund providers disclose these mechanics in prospectuses and marketing materials. Still, the warnings often fade against the appeal of outsized gains. The recent episode showed how quickly that trade-off can turn against holders.

The damage was not limited to one product. Demand for leveraged tech exposure had climbed for weeks before the reversal. Heavy inflows near a market peak can magnify losses once sentiment shifts.

For most investors, plain index funds offer cleaner exposure with fewer moving parts. Leveraged products suit short-term tactical trades at best. The latest pullback underscored the difference between the two.
