UAW President Shawn Fain Re-Elected to Second Term

Shawn Fain has won a second term as president of the United Auto Workers. The union announced the result following its leadership election. Fain defeated challenger Mark Gaber, a union member and attorney.

The election took place as the UAW continues to expand its membership across the auto industry. Fain first took office in 2023 after a landmark strike against the Detroit Three automakers. That strike secured significant wage increases and benefits for workers.

Under Fain’s leadership, the UAW has organized new plants and attracted workers beyond traditional automaking. The union has targeted foreign-owned automakers and electric vehicle manufacturers. These efforts have reshaped labor organizing in the South and other regions.

Fain’s presidency has also brought increased federal scrutiny. A court-appointed monitor oversees the union following a corruption scandal involving previous leaders. Prosecutors have investigated several UAW officials during Fain’s tenure.

The UAW remains under a consent decree that requires independent oversight of its finances and elections. Fain has said he supports the monitorship and pledges to continue reforms. His second term will run for four years.

Fain’s re-election signals continued support for his aggressive bargaining strategy. Members have backed his approach to confront automakers directly. The union’s clout has grown as a result of recent contract wins.

Going forward, Fain faces challenges including organizing non-union plants and managing internal disputes. Federal oversight will continue to shape the union’s operations. His leadership will be tested as the auto industry shifts toward electric vehicles.
