Judge Orders JPMorgan to Continue Paying Charlie Javice’s $144M Legal Defense Amid Appeal

A federal judge has ruled that JPMorgan Chase must continue covering the legal defense costs of Charlie Javice, the entrepreneur convicted of defrauding the bank. The decision rejects the bank’s attempt to stop payments as Javice appeals her conviction.

Javice and her legal team have accumulated $144.2 million in bills, according to court records. The expenses include unusual items such as gummy bears and cellulite butter, which have drawn attention in the case.

The ruling stems from Javice’s conviction for misleading JPMorgan during its $175 million acquisition of her startup, Frank. Prosecutors argued she inflated the number of customers to secure the deal.

JPMorgan argued it should not be liable for ongoing legal fees, citing the conviction. The judge disagreed, stating the bank’s indemnification obligations remain in effect during the appeals process.

The court emphasized that Javice’s legal team has submitted detailed billing records. The receipts show costs covering standard legal work alongside the unusual personal items, which sparked debate over reasonable expenses.

Legal experts note that such indemnification clauses are common in acquisition agreements. They are designed to protect executives from litigation arising from their roles at the company.

Javice continues to maintain her innocence and is pursuing an appeal. The case continues to draw scrutiny for its large legal bills and the high-profile nature of the fraud allegations.

The ruling ensures Javice’s legal defense will remain funded as the appeals process moves forward. JPMorgan has not indicated whether it will challenge the decision further.
