Americans Need $1.2 Million to Retire, but Debt Keeps Most from Saving Enough

Americans now believe they need $1.2 million to retire comfortably, according to a new survey. That figure marks a significant increase from previous years, reflecting rising costs and economic uncertainty. Yet for most households, that goal remains out of reach.

More than 80% of Americans worry about running out of money during retirement. Financial experts note that this fear is widespread across all age groups and income levels. The concern is so pervasive that it keeps many people awake at night.

The primary obstacle preventing retirement savings is debt. Many households carry high levels of credit card balances, student loans, and mortgage payments. This debt reduces the amount available to set aside for the future.

Younger workers face particular challenges. They often struggle with student loan debt while trying to save for retirement. This dual financial burden can delay saving for decades.

Even among those who are saving, the amounts are often insufficient. Many contribute only enough to receive their employer’s matching contribution. Financial advisors recommend saving at least 15% of annual income for retirement.

The gap between perceived needs and actual savings continues to widen. A large portion of Americans have less than $10,000 saved for retirement. This leaves them vulnerable to outliving their assets.

Experts suggest starting small and increasing contributions over time. Small, consistent investments can grow significantly due to compound interest. The key is to begin saving as early as possible, regardless of the amount.
