Pirro Defies Trump on Reflecting Pool Collapse, Citing Faulty Materials

Federal prosecutors in Washington have dropped their investigation into the collapse of a reflecting pool on the National Mall, a case that has drawn sharp criticism from President Trump. The decision was announced by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, who cited faulty construction materials as the primary cause of the incident. Her conclusion directly contradicts the president’s long-held belief that sabotage was behind the structural failure.

Mr. Trump responded quickly, stating he disagrees “100%” with Ms. Pirro’s findings. The president has repeatedly suggested that the collapse was the result of deliberate actions by political opponents, though he has not offered public evidence to support that claim. Ms. Pirro’s office, however, concluded after a months-long review that poor welding and substandard concrete were to blame.

The reflecting pool, a popular tourist site near the Lincoln Memorial, partially caved in during a busy summer weekend last year. No injuries were reported, but the incident prompted an immediate federal inquiry. Engineers and inspectors were brought in to assess the damage and determine whether the failure pointed to deeper issues with other nearby structures.

Ms. Pirro, a former judge and television personality, was appointed by the president to lead the D.C. attorney’s office. Her decision to overrule the president’s theory marks a rare public break within the administration. In a statement, she said the investigation followed standard protocols and that all evidence was weighed independently. She noted that forensic teams found no traces of tampering or explosive devices at the site.

The president’s criticism has intensified pressure on Ms. Pirro, with some allies calling for her removal. White House press officials have not indicated whether any personnel changes are planned, but they have echoed the president’s skepticism in private briefings. Meanwhile, senior Justice Department leaders have remained silent publicly, leaving Ms. Pirro to defend her office’s work alone.

Legal analysts say the case highlights ongoing tensions between the president and federal law enforcement agencies. Independent experts have reviewed the technical reports and largely support Ms. Pirro’s conclusions, pointing to clear signs of structural fatigue. The National Park Service, which manages the Mall, has already begun repair work using upgraded materials, with a projected completion date later this year.

The broader implication of this dispute may extend beyond the pool itself. It raises questions about how the administration handles findings that conflict with political narratives. For now, Ms. Pirro has stood by her assessment, and no formal challenge to her authority has been filed. The repair project continues on schedule, and the Mall remains open to visitors, with the damaged area cordoned off.
