Cyclospora Outbreak Deaths in Michigan: Record-Breaking Parasite Cases Continue to Rise Nationwide

Two deaths in Michigan are now linked to a record-breaking Cyclospora outbreak, according to state health officials. The fatalities mark the first known deaths connected to the largest domestically reported outbreak of the parasite in U.S. history.

Michigan has reported more cases than any other state in this outbreak. The state’s Department of Health and Human Services confirmed the deaths on Tuesday, though officials declined to provide additional details about the patients. Cyclospora infections are typically not fatal, and severe outcomes remain extremely rare.

Nationwide, case counts continue to climb. Health authorities have identified several hundred confirmed infections across multiple states, with numbers expected to rise in the coming days. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is coordinating the investigation alongside state and local agencies.

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that causes intestinal illness. People become infected by consuming food or water contaminated with the organism. Symptoms usually begin about one week after exposure and include watery diarrhea, cramping, bloating, nausea, and fatigue.

Most healthy individuals recover without treatment, but the infection can be prolonged and severe in those with weakened immune systems. In this outbreak, hospitalizations have been reported, though health officials have not released exact figures. Diagnosis requires a specific laboratory test that is not part of routine stool examinations.

The source of the outbreak has not yet been confirmed. Investigators are tracing potential contaminated produce items, a common vehicle for Cyclospora. Previous outbreaks in the U.S. have been linked to imported fresh vegetables, including cilantro and salad mixes.

Public health officials urge anyone with prolonged diarrhea to seek medical care. Early diagnosis and appropriate antibiotic treatment can reduce the duration of illness. Restaurants and retailers are advised to follow proper washing and handling procedures for fresh produce.

The current outbreak has surpassed all prior U.S. cyclosporiasis events in total case numbers. Federal and state teams are working to identify the contaminated product quickly, but investigations of this nature often take several weeks. Until a source is confirmed, health experts recommend thoroughly washing produce and practicing safe food handling at home.
