Trump’s Trade War With Canada Risks Forcing the Fed Back Into Quantitative Easing

President Trump’s escalating trade dispute with Canada may force the Federal Reserve to resume quantitative easing, according to new economic analysis. The policy shift would mark a significant reversal after years of balance sheet reduction.

Economists warn that sweeping tariffs on Canadian goods could reignite inflationary pressures while slowing growth. That combination, known as stagflation, creates a difficult dilemma for central bankers.

The Fed typically raises rates to fight inflation but cuts them to support a weakening economy. Facing both at once, officials may turn to asset purchases to stabilize markets.

Quantitative easing involves buying government bonds to inject liquidity into the financial system. The approach was widely used during the 2008 crisis and the 2020 pandemic recession.

A return to that playbook would benefit gold, stocks, and long-term bonds, analysts predict. Investors often flock to these assets when central banks signal looser monetary policy.

However, the timeline remains uncertain. The effects of trade disruptions take months to materialize in official data.

Market participants are watching upcoming inflation reports and Fed statements for early clues. Any hints of dovish pivot could trigger immediate repositioning across asset classes.

The trade war’s impact on supply chains adds another layer of complexity. Higher costs for raw materials and intermediate goods may persist even after tariffs are lifted.

For now, the probability of renewed quantitative easing remains low but rising. Traders are pricing in a greater chance of rate cuts by late 2025.

Long-term investors should monitor the situation closely but avoid hasty decisions. The eventual outcome depends on political negotiations as much as economic fundamentals.
