6 Coldest Beaches in the U.S. and Europe for a Refreshing Summer Swim

As temperatures climb, finding a beach with genuinely cold water becomes a priority. A quick plunge can offer immediate relief from the oppressive heat. These six destinations are known for their strikingly cool waters. Each location provides a distinct coastal experience paired with a refreshing swim.

The Pacific Northwest offers some of the most bracing ocean water in the continental United States. Beaches near Cannon Beach, Oregon, see water temperatures that rarely rise above the mid-50s. The cold, nutrient-rich currents also attract diverse marine life. Visitors should expect a brisk, invigorating swim rather than a leisurely float.

Further north, the shores of Lake Superior provide a freshwater alternative with a similar chill. The lake’s immense depth and volume keep its surface temperature remarkably low, even in August. Popular spots like Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore offer stunning scenery alongside their crisp waters. Swimmers often find that the cold water clears the mind as much as it cools the body.

Moving to the East Coast, the beaches of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, are known for their cooler Atlantic waters. The Gulf Stream’s influence is weaker here compared to southern New England. Water temperatures typically hover in the low 60s during the peak summer season. This makes for a sharp contrast with the more tepid waters found further south.

For a more remote option, the beaches of Big Sur in California deliver a dramatic and chilly experience. The rugged coastline drops off sharply into the Pacific, bringing deep, cold water closer to shore. Summer fog often blankets the area, keeping air temperatures moderate. The result is a wild and refreshing escape from inland heat.

In Europe, the French Atlantic coast offers similar cool-water conditions. Beaches like Biarritz see water temperatures that rarely exceed the low 60s. The strong Atlantic swells make this a hotspot for surfers, who wear wetsuits year-round. Casual swimmers should prepare for a quick, sharp shock upon entry.

Finally, the southern coast of Iceland provides an extreme example of cold-water swimming. Even in July, ocean temperatures often sit in the mid-40s. Locations like the black sand beaches near Vík are stunning but require serious preparation. Most visitors opt for a brief dip followed by a visit to a nearby geothermal pool to warm up.
