Why Economists Say Elevated Bond Yields Are Built to Last

Economists expect bond yields to remain elevated for the foreseeable future. A quarterly Wall Street Journal survey of forecasters points to persistent inflation as a key driver. Federal Reserve rate increases and growing government debt also play major roles.

Forecasters believe borrowing costs will stay higher for longer than previously expected. The survey gathered predictions from dozens of economists across major financial institutions. Their consensus marks a shift from earlier optimism about declining rates.

Inflation has proven more stubborn than many anticipated. Rising prices push bond yields upward as investors demand greater returns. The Federal Reserve’s aggressive rate hikes aim to cool inflation but also lift yields.

Government debt levels add further pressure. As borrowing increases, so does the supply of bonds. That supply can push yields higher when demand does not keep pace.

The Fed has signaled it may keep rates elevated to avoid repeating past mistakes. Officials want to prevent inflation from becoming entrenched. Markets are adjusting to this higher-for-longer stance.

Long-term bond yields influence mortgages, corporate loans, and consumer credit. Higher yields mean costlier borrowing for households and businesses. This can slow economic growth over time.

Investors are recalibrating portfolios in response to the new rate environment. Stocks and bonds face renewed competition for capital. The era of ultra-low yields appears unlikely to return soon.
