NYU Student Charged With Hate Crimes for Displaying Swastika Flag on Campus

A man has been charged with hate crimes after displaying a swastika flag on the campus of New York University.

The suspect, Alexander Stepnowsky, was arrested on Tuesday in Manhattan’s Lower East Side neighborhood. The arrest came nearly one month after the incident occurred.

An NYU official confirmed that Stepnowsky was a student at the university when the event took place.

The charges stem from the display of the flag, which featured the Nazi symbol. Authorities classified the act as a hate crime under state law.

The specific location and date of the flag’s display were not immediately released. Investigators detailed the connection between the symbol and potential bias motivations.

University officials have not commented on Stepnowsky’s current enrollment status. The case remains under review by campus security and local law enforcement.

Legal proceedings are expected to continue, with a court appearance likely scheduled in the coming weeks. Details regarding legal representation for Stepnowsky are not yet available.
