As A.I. Risks Mount, Washington Debates but Delays Action

Washington is increasingly debating the risks of artificial intelligence. Fears of an A.I. catastrophe have grown louder in recent months. Lawmakers have responded with hearings, proposals, and little concrete action.

President Trump has dismissed those concerns. He has refused to engage on balancing A.I.’s risks and rewards. His stance places him at the front of the “what-me-worry?” crowd.

The debate centers on whether A.I. could cause large-scale harm. Some experts warn of job losses, misinformation, and security threats. Others argue such fears are overstated and slow innovation.

Congress has introduced several bills to study or regulate A.I. Most remain stalled in committee. Few have reached a full vote. The pace reflects deep disagreement over how to proceed.

Tech companies continue to release powerful A.I. systems. They face limited federal oversight. State governments have started filling the gap with their own rules.

The White House has focused on voluntary guidelines. It prefers industry-led standards over new laws. Critics say that approach leaves the public unprotected.

Without swift action, the gap between A.I. development and government oversight will keep widening. Washington stirs, but mostly slumbers. The question is whether it will wake before the next crisis.
