EverBank Owners Explore Exit Options Amid Ownership Turmoil

Private-equity firms that acquired EverBank in 2023 are now exploring exit options, according to people familiar with the matter. The five owners have reportedly disagreed on the bank’s strategic direction since the deal closed.

The Florida-based lender has been caught between competing visions for growth and profitability. Internal friction has slowed decision-making on key initiatives, including expansion plans and technology upgrades.

Sources indicate that some investors are seeking a sale or initial public offering to realize returns on their investment. Others have pushed for a longer hold period to build more value before exiting.

EverBank’s performance has been mixed since the acquisition, with pressure from interest-rate swings and rising deposit costs. The bank’s leadership has worked to stabilize operations, but ownership divisions have complicated efforts to chart a clear path forward.

The firm hired advisers earlier this year to assess strategic alternatives, the sources added. No formal sale process has been launched, and talks remain at an early stage.

An exit would mark the end of a short but turbulent ownership period for the bank. The original purchase valued EverBank at over $2 billion, with buyers betting on cost synergies and a stronger regional footprint.

Industry analysts note that regional banks face a challenging market for deals, given regulatory scrutiny and shifting economic conditions. Finding a buyer may prove difficult unless pricing aligns with realistic earnings expectations.

EverBank’s owners include several large private-equity funds, which have not commented publicly on their plans. The bank has continued normal operations and recently reported quarterly results that met modest analyst forecasts.

The eventual outcome will depend on market conditions and the ability of the ownership group to resolve internal disagreements. For now, the bank remains in a holding pattern, awaiting a clearer signal on its future structure.
