Hiking in the American West often means navigating canyons, small streams, and dry creek beds. These landscapes can be deceptively dangerous. Rainfall far upstream can trigger rapidly rising water that traps hikers with little warning.
Flash floods are sudden and powerful. They occur when intense rain falls in a short period, overwhelming the ground’s ability to absorb water. In narrow canyons, the water funnels into a tight space, increasing its speed and force. A dry wash can transform into a raging river in minutes.
Hikers must check the weather forecast before heading out. This includes looking at conditions for the entire region, not just the trailhead. Rain falling miles away can still send a surge of water down the canyon. Forecasts for the specific watershed are the most reliable indicator.
Time of day matters significantly. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the West during summer months. These storms can develop quickly and drop heavy rain on a localized area. Starting hikes early in the morning reduces the risk of being caught in a vulnerable position when storms peak.
The terrain itself offers visual clues. Look for high-water marks on canyon walls, such as debris stuck in branches or a distinct line of lighter rock. These signs show where water has recently flowed. If you see these signs, the area is prone to flooding, and you should remain alert.
When inside a canyon, listen carefully. A rumbling sound that grows louder is a primary warning sign of an approaching flood. The sound is often compared to a freight train. Another sign is a sudden change in water color, from clear to muddy, indicating sediment from upstream is moving toward you.
If water begins to rise, abandon gear and move to higher ground immediately. Climb the canyon walls to a point well above the waterline. Do not attempt to outrun the water in the canyon itself. The speed of the current and debris within it make escape nearly impossible once the flood arrives.
Never cross a flooded washing or stream. Water depth can be deceiving, and the current is much stronger than it looks. Even shallow water can knock a person off their feet. Turning back is always the safer option, even if it ruins the day’s plan.
