Hegseth Renames Charleston Base for Lindsey Graham, Citing Senator’s Military Record

Joint Base Charleston has been officially renamed Joint Base Lindsey Graham, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Monday. The decision honors the South Carolina senator’s military service.

Graham served as a judge advocate general in the U.S. Air Force before retiring as a colonel in 2015. His legal career in the military spanned more than three decades.

The renaming follows a broader effort to designate military installations after individuals with direct service connections. Hegseth cited Graham’s long record of public service as the reason for the change.

Local officials welcomed the announcement, noting the base’s importance to the Charleston region. The installation supports multiple defense missions and hosts thousands of active-duty personnel.

Graham did not comment directly on the renaming, but his office issued a brief statement thanking military leaders for the recognition. The senator has been a vocal supporter of defense spending and veterans’ affairs during his time in Congress.

The new name became effective immediately, with signage updates expected in the coming weeks. No operational changes are planned at the installation.

Military historians note that renaming bases after living politicians is rare but not unprecedented. The decision may draw scrutiny from lawmakers who have questioned such designations.

Joint Base Lindsey Graham remains a key hub for Air Force and Navy operations on the East Coast. Its mission focus stays unchanged under the new title.
