House Approves $40 Billion Ukraine Aid Despite Republican Leadership Opposition

House Passes Ukraine Aid in Defiance of Republican Leaders

Eighteen Republican lawmakers broke with their party and sided with Democrats on Wednesday. The House approved a new package of military and economic aid for Ukraine. The vote delivered a sharp rebuke to the president’s foreign policy agenda.

The legislation passed with a bipartisan majority of 220 to 211. It allocates $40 billion in additional assistance for Kyiv. The funding aims to support Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s invasion through next year.

Speaker of the House John Thompson had urged Republicans to oppose the measure. He argued the money should be spent on domestic priorities instead. The defection of 18 GOP members marked a significant loss of party unity.

Democratic leaders praised the outcome as a necessary stand for global stability. They emphasized the importance of continuing support for an ally under attack. The vote underscored a rare moment of cross-party cooperation on a contentious issue.

Republican dissenters cited national security and moral obligations as reasons for their vote. Representative Sarah Mitchell of Ohio said abandoning Ukraine would embolden Russia. Others expressed concern over the humanitarian toll of the prolonged conflict.

The White House signaled it would quickly sign the bill into law. President Biden has made Ukraine aid a cornerstone of his foreign policy. The administration views the package as critical to deterring further Russian aggression.

The vote signals continued congressional division over foreign engagement. Opponents warn the aid package adds to the national debt without clear end goals. The debate is expected to intensify as the war enters its third year.
