The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will hold regular trading hours this Friday, July 3rd. Independence Day falls on a Saturday this year, which changes the typical schedule for market closures.
Federal regulations dictate that when a holiday lands on a Saturday, the observed federal holiday shifts to the preceding Friday. As a result, Friday, July 3rd is recognized as the official federal holiday for Independence Day.
Despite the federal holiday designation, the stock exchanges will operate on a normal schedule. Both the NYSE and Nasdaq plan to open at 9:30 a.m. Eastern and close at 4:00 p.m. Eastern.
This differs from past years when the Fourth of July fell on a weekday. Under typical circumstances, the markets would close entirely on July 4th or have an early close on July 3rd.
Bond markets will follow a different pattern. The bond market will close early at 2:00 p.m. Eastern on Friday, July 3rd.
The U.S. Postal Service will suspend mail delivery on Friday, July 3rd. This closure aligns with the observed federal holiday schedule.
Banks will also be closed on Friday, as they follow the federal holiday calendar. Customers should plan accordingly for any in-person banking needs.
Regular market operations and mail delivery will resume on Monday, July 6th. Investors and consumers should note this one-day shift in the holiday schedule.
