Israel’s U.N. Envoy Slams Special Rapporteur Over Netanyahu Arrest Warrant Threats

Ambassador Danny Danon, Israel’s envoy to the United Nations, delivered a sharp rebuke during a General Assembly address on Monday. He directed his criticism at U.N. Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese and other officials over threats to pursue arrest warrants against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Danon characterized the threat as empty and lacking legal merit.

The dispute revolves around potential International Criminal Court actions related to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Danon argued the court has no jurisdiction over Israel. He accused the rapporteur of bias and of overstepping her mandate.

Danon’s remarks came during a heated session focused on the humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territories. He dismissed calls for international legal action as politically motivated. The ambassador warned such moves undermine the U.N.’s credibility.

The Israeli government has consistently rejected the ICC’s authority. Officials maintain Israel has a robust and independent judicial system. They argue it is capable of investigating any alleged violations independently.

The U.N. special rapporteur has not directly responded to Danon’s comments. Previous reports from her office have documented alleged violations of international law by both Israel and Hamas. These findings have been disputed by Israeli authorities.

The timing of Danon’s speech coincides with increased diplomatic pressure on Israel. Several nations have recently voiced support for an ICC probe. This has strained relations between Israel and some of its traditional allies.

Danon’s address marked a clear refusal to engage further with what he calls baseless accusations. He called on the international community to focus on hostage releases. The ambassador also urged greater cooperation on regional security issues.
