Pentagon Hid Dozens of U.S. Military Injuries From Iran Conflict, Raising Transparency Concerns

The Pentagon has withheld information about dozens of U.S. military injuries related to the conflict with Iran, according to officials and documents reviewed by the New York Times.

More than 40 service members were wounded in attacks linked to Iranian-backed forces throughout the region. The injuries ranged from blast concussions to shrapnel wounds.

Military officials said they were not legally required to disclose details about injured troops. This is especially true when service members return to duty quickly.

The Central Command policy allows officials to withhold casualty data for operational security reasons. The lack of disclosure has raised questions about transparency during a tense military period.

The injuries occurred during 2024 and 2025 across multiple bases in Iraq and Syria. One attack at a Jordanian outpost left three soldiers dead and many others wounded.

Lawmakers have pushed for more detailed reporting on troop harm. Some argue the public deserves a full accounting of conflict costs.

Defense officials maintain that withholding minor injuries prevents enemy forces from gauging attack effectiveness. The debate continues as the U.S. presence in the region remains under threat.
